The purpose of Umrah is something many people are eager to understand. While it is not obligatory, our beloved Prophet (P.B.U.H.) performed it four times in His lifetime, emphasizing its significance and spiritual benefits. The true essence of Umrah is something that only you can truly understand and explain for yourself. No one else can define its purpose for you. As Umar ibn al-Khattab (R.A.), the esteemed companion and second caliph of our beloved Prophet (P.B.U.H.), narrated. The Prophet (P.B.U.H.) said: “The reward of deeds depends on the intention, and each person will get the reward according to what he intended.” This means that whoever embarks on a journey for the sake of Allah and His Prophet (P.B.U.H.) will be rewarded accordingly. Similarly, if someone travels for worldly gains—whether for a better life or marriage—that will be their reason and reward. This hadith, narrated by al-Bukhari in Bad‘ al-Wahy, emphasizes the importance of sincerity in every action including Umrah. Not only Umrah, but every act performed by our beloved Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H.) is filled with goodness and wisdom. The virtues of Umrah are countless and cannot be fully captured on a single page. However, based on the teachings of the Quran and Hadith, we will highlight some of its greatest benefits for you here.
Four Main Advantages of Performing Umrah: 1. Being the Guest of Allah Almighty 2. Eradication of Sins and Poverty 3. Equivalent to Jihad 4. Equal to Hajj
1. Being the Guest of Allah Almighty As Allah’s Messenger (P.B.U.H.) said: “The guests of Allah are three: The Ghazi (a man who fights in jihad just for God), the Pilgrim (hajj performers), and the Mutamir (Umrah performers).” Hadith No. 2626, Book of The Rites of Hajj, Sunan AN Nasai, Vol. 3. It is a tremendous blessing to be a guest of Allah, setting aside all worldly concerns and embracing His divine mercy. Imagine yourself in His sacred presence, receiving His boundless rewards. When do you plan to become a guest of Allah? Surely, you should consider booking your Umrah package with Umrah Murshad. 2. Eradication of Sins and Poverty Allah’s Messenger (P.B.U.H.) said: “Perform Hajj and ‘Umrah one after the other, for they remove poverty and sins just as the bellows remove filth from iron, gold, and silver. There is no reward for an accepted Hajj except Paradise (Jannah). ” In another hadith, narrated by Abu Huraira (R.A.) said: that Prophet (P.B.U.H.) said, ‘From one Umrah to another Umrah will be the redemption of sins for whatever (minor) occurs between them.’ (Bukhari, Muslim). 3. Equivalent to Jihad It is narrated by Abu Huraira (R.A.) that once Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H.) said, “The Jihad of the elderly, weak and the woman is performing Hajj and Umrah.” Hadith No. 2627, Sunan An-Nasa’i, Vol. 3. The greatest reward for jihad is Shahadat, which refers to a person who attains martyrdom while fighting for the sake of Allah. This status is highly esteemed in Islam, granting a superior position in paradise (Jannah) that every Muslim aspires to achieve. However, one can also earn a reward equivalent to jihad by performing Umrah. 4. Equal to Hajj Once the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H.) said, “Umrah performed during Ramadan will equal (in terms of rewards) to Hajj or Hajj performed with Me (P.B.U.H.).” (Bukhari, Muslim). Every Muslim aspires to perform Umrah, however Hadiths say that it is crucial to perform it during Ramadan. You should not miss the opportunity to perform Umrah in this month. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) performed the Hajj in the last few months of his life, but before he performed the four Umrahs, as explained at the beginning. I have a question for all Muslims: Have any of you missed the opportunity to perform Umrah with Allah’s Messenger (PBUH)? The answer is, that none of you wants to miss this chance. I have added another Hadith to understand the importance of Umrah in Ramadan. Ibn Abbas (RA) stated: “Those Muslims were called Ansaar, who were from Madina and had shared their property with other Muslims who came from Makkah,” the Apostle of Allah (PBUH) remarked to Umm Sinaan Al-Ansaariyah. “What prevented you from performing Hajj with us? She replied: We have only two camels. The father of my son and my son took one for the Hajj pilgrimage, leaving the other for us to fetch water. He then stated: When Ramadan arrives, perform Umrah; Umrah during this month is equivalent to Hajj.” (Al-Bukhaari–1782, Muslim-1256) Purpose of Umrah Getting rewards equal to Hajj and jihad, removing sins and alleviate poverty are the objectives of Umrah. However, you will be rewarded of what you have planned as mentioned in the Quran, “Whoever wants (by his deeds) the harvest of the Hereafter, We increase for him in his harvest (in terms of reward), and whoever desires the harvest (reward) of this world (by his deeds), We give him thereof, but there is not for him in the Hereafter any share.” [al-Shoorah42:20].
